Guidelines – Understanding Credit Reports
It is not an easy task to understand the contents of a credit report. It is almost impossible for a lay man to grasp what a credit report says at the very first sight. Understanding the credit report thoroughly is important for self assessment, so that the person gets to know the exact status of the credit scores. This will indirectly aid in improving the credit scores. Here are some of the basic guidelines to understand the report:
- There is an exclusive column for basic personal details such as name, age and gender. This section will also include contact details and the unique social security number. One needs to go through this information and check for perfection. If there is any mismatch between the original information and the recorded ones, it is mandatory that the person brings it to the notice of the bureau which has prepared the credit report.
- A separate section is meant for information about bodies that have checked or accessed the credit report of a person. There is no possibility of the credit score getting affected if the credit report is being analysed by a company or any such organization. For example, if a person has applied for a loan in a private or a nationalised bank, there will obviously be a complete check on the credit history of the individual, for which the credit report alone can to be used. This kind of reviewing will not cause even the slightest difference in the credit scores.
- A list of bills that have been left unpaid, debts, late payment of bills will be mentioned in the credit report separately which needs to be checked for any errors.
- Information in a credit report may be negative also, which depends completely on the individual’s efforts to maintain a good credit record and score. The negative information such as the late payment of a debt may also be regarded as a part of the credit report and such information are commonly known as dings.
- There may be several dings on a credit report which again depends on the credit history of the individual. It is to be noted that these dings are usually separated from one another by means of punctuation marks such a hyphen or a star in the report.
If any errors are spotted by an individual in his or her credit report, it can be brought to the authorities’ attention in the credit bureau and can be rectified.
